Anna Dunn Tabke, founder and president of Leita Advisory, shared her perspective in a recent FundFire feature on State Street Investment Management’s new ETF, launched in partnership with UC Investments. The fund aims to open up institutional-style strategies, inspired by the University of California’s approach, to more retail investors.
Anna notes that while the fund’s design resembles a major endowment, it relies only on public stocks and bonds—lacking the broader diversification, including private assets and hedge funds, found in true institutional portfolios. She points out this allocation may be more aggressive than most institutions would choose, and investors could already create a similar mix themselves.
“With an institutional investment strategy, you typically see diversified hedge funds and private assets like private equity. It’s an interesting licensing opportunity, but this doesn’t seem aimed at institutions because institutions underwrite a process, and this doesn’t really outline a process,” Anna explains.
The article highlights this launch as an innovative step toward democratizing institutional strategies, but as Anna suggests, investors should understand how these products differ from traditional endowment approaches.
